JML SIPs was approached by our client, owner of Staran Architects, to supply and install a super-efficient, single-storey extension to an existing B-listed bothy, set in the grounds of a Georgian country house. The client had designed a modern, flat-roofed extension to transform the existing traditional stone-built building into a home for himself and his family. The building was carefully considered to maximise views of the mature gardens and to ensure that as much character was retained from the original building as possible, contrasting against the contemporary extension.
As the bothy is connected to the existing walled garden, care had to be taken during the build to ensure nothing was structurally undermined and as much character as possible was retained. The existing bothy structure was neither level nor square, making tying in the extension a challenge. A 3D survey was undertaken prior to engineering the SIPs kit, meaning the new building was designed to fit perfectly alongside the old. The site was also within a walled garden with no vehiclular access. The SIPs kit was manufactured off-site and delivered modularly to minimise the need for heavy machinery.
JML SIPs worked with the client to precisely engineer the SIPs kit to perfectly tie in with the shape of the existing garden walls. This included accurately aligning each opening with those of the existing building. Once on site, the lack of vehicular access meant that each panel was hand-manoeuvred into its final position before being fixed in place. This project was filmed for the Autumn 2021 series of Grand Designs. JML SIPs worked in close collaboration with the production team and film crew whilst on-site.
